Why depth matters most
In a narrow entryway or hallway, console-table depth often matters more than width. Measure from the wall into the walking path and preserve enough clearance for people, doors and nearby furniture. A shallow table can provide a useful landing surface without making the route feel crowded.
Use assembled dimensions for planning. Package dimensions describe delivery boxes, not the installed footprint.
Measure the placement area
Record:
- available wall width;
- maximum depth before the walking path becomes restricted;
- baseboard thickness and nearby outlets;
- door-swing and drawer-opening clearance;
- the height of windows, switches or artwork above the table.
If the table will sit behind a sofa, compare its height with the sofa back and avoid blocking floor vents or electrical access.
Choose storage based on the location
- Drawers can organize keys, chargers and smaller everyday items.
- Open shelves can hold baskets, books or décor.
- Cabinets hide larger items but need door-swing clearance.
- A simple open-frame design can keep a compact space visually lighter.
For deeper dining-room storage, compare sideboards. For a central living-room surface, browse coffee tables.
Check stability and wall anchoring
Tall, narrow furniture can be more sensitive to uneven floors, accidental pulling or climbing. Review the exact product’s assembly and anchoring instructions. Use the supplied anti-tip hardware when required and choose fasteners appropriate for the wall construction.
Do not place heavy objects near an unsupported edge or allow children to climb on drawers or shelves.
Match width to the wall or sofa
A console table should look intentional without filling every inch of wall space. Leave breathing room at each side, particularly near doors and corners. Behind a sofa, compare the table width with the straight portion of the sofa and account for reclining sections, chaise extensions and nearby side tables.
Compare delivered price and access
Compare the current item price plus required shipping on the same pre-tax basis. Confirm the same model, finish and included components, then check that the packages can pass through the entrance, hallway, elevator or stair turn.
